A Grass Farmer's Take on Methane Gas
I'm no environmentalist. But the radical environmentalists that are concerned with methane coming from cows have neglected to realize something: God had a plan when he made cows. He did not make a creature that is going to burp the earth to destruction.
Here's the deal: in a healthy pasture with ideal mob stocking density and daily-weekly rotations, there are microbes that proliferate in the soil. And they live off methane from the air. The amount of microbes living on a given pasture will need in a day more methane than the cows supported on that pasture will produce in a year. Read that again. This means that if we, on our farms, mimic what God did in nature, those radical environmentalists will have no reason to get rid of our bovines.
I simply do not understand how environmentalists think that being vegan is going to help our planet. I respect the ones that look for solutions other than banning red meat, though I don't agree with them completely. But they are looking for solutions like methane-catching covers on manure lagoons and methane digesters. They overlook this extremely efficient and simple method. Cows produce excess methane in CAFO's (concentrated animal feeding operations), because they were not designed for CAFO's. They were made to be moving, mobbing, and mowing.
Why do we need feedlots anyway?
